BASS FUNERAL HOMES has been a part of the business community of
Smith County since 1916. J. L. Bass worked for his uncles in the Cheek
Brothers Undertaking firm ( which originated in 1897) in the New
Middleton Community. In 1916 J. L. Bass Started his own undertaking
firm in the New Middleton community. in 1916 J.L. Bass purchased the
Cheek Brothers Undertaking firm which had become Cheek and Neal
Undertakers and merged it with his own. Now Bass Funeral Homes, Under
the ownership, operation, and management of third generation funeral
directors of the Bass family includes funeral homes in Carthage,
Gordonsville, and Alexandria. Perpetual care cemeteries in
Gordonsville and Hickman allowing us to better serve the families of
our area. As a part of our heritage the Bass Family has maintained two
horse drawn hearses that were used by J. L. Bass in the early years,
one of which is on display at the Museum of Appalachian in Norris,
Tennessee and the other which is sheltered at the Carthage chapel of
Bass Funeral Home.
